2020 Year in Review

January

  • Steroids in my back that helped a lot
  • Was right about a backend issue at work but didn't know enough to make my case

February

  • Discussed an API rewrite that went nowhere
  • Started Learning Golang in earnest

March

  • First Month of WFH
  • Lots of drinking at home, virtual get togethers

April

  • Started interviewing with Google
  • Got our Rottweiler Bowie!

May

  • No idea what I was doing during this time, total brain fog. I think it had to do with drinking and raising and incredibly high maintenance puppy.

June

  • Same, I essentially no memory of what I did in June. Tried to get some contract work but really struggled to snag a contract.
  • Had some final interviews with Google.

July

  • Brutal rejection by Google, got to last phase for an L4 role in LA, team wanted me but hiring committee rejected. Would have been >2x what I currently make. Still a bit bitter about it.

August

  • The first month of sobriety from alcohol was hard. Also Texas is brutally hot, it is really hard to exercise when its 110 degrees out.

September

  • Devoted a lot of work to understanding our logistics at Meshify. Became acutely aware of what brought some legacy systems into existence and the dependencies involved.

October

  • Worked on preparing a proposal to make our logistics involve less friction and less speculatively general approaches that lock us into a poor security model.

November

  • Created a proposal to phase out our legacy system while also doing our work to deploy two greenfield apps to our users.

December

  • Worked on finalising proposal, assisted in some ops work.
  • Built out some golang work to cement my understanding of how our backend REST service works.
